AVIF is the new kid; JPEG is the veteran. Here's an honest comparison.
AVIF is typically 40–60% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality. For a 2 MB JPEG photo, expect ~800 KB–1.2 MB as AVIF.
AVIF handles gradients, skin tones and fine detail better — less banding, fewer artifacts at low quality. JPEG shows blockiness in smooth gradients.
JPEG: 100%. AVIF: ~93% (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16+). Always provide a JPEG fallback via <picture>.
AVIF encoding is 5–10x slower than JPEG. Pre-compress at build time; don't encode on the fly for user uploads.
